Written by an Y.S. Chia "Can everyone see my screen?" Is a phrase I'm sure we've all heard till sian.
The universal virtual meeting cliche is often a confirm with chope sign that it's gonna be a long day.
It's also the apt title for Singapore Art Museum's new exhibition about the post covid-19 internet
Can Everyone See My Screen is a 100% free exhibition(swee lah) that spans 14 installations, exploring the internet, technology and how it connects to us. Its doors open from 10 am to 7 pm each day.
So what does an exhibit about the internet feel like? The Honest People went down to check it out.
What We Saw:
There are 14 installations and while most neatly packed in one gallery- I think abit too long to cover all ah. So here are our top picks!
Build your identity - Narcissus Pixelus

If you’ve ever wanted an alter ego - now can one! Narcissus Pixelus is a character creator designed to look like an arcade game. It's damn cool, letting you design your alter ego and providing two FREE good-quality print outs of your character.

You can paste one on the photo wall with blue tack, though it took me a while to realise this as they weren’t any signs, haiz.
Nobody cared who I was until I put on the mask - Life Circuit

Continuing on the idea of Watchdogs - Life Circuit greets you with footage of… you.
This sibei creepy exhibit has placed cameras in a mask, and you can see and hear yourself. It’s a smart metaphor for technology - which is supposed to help us, yet has been altered(by us naturally) to restrict ourselves and prey on our impulse to affirm our image. Dark.
Internet Famous Before Tiktok - Greatest Hits by P.O.P Station

Remember when Youtube famous was all the hype? The vibrant music videos by POP station certainly do.
The music videos which first started in 2004 invited the public to perform in cheesy music videos - an avenue for everyone to get their 3 minutes of fame. So wholesome sia!
It might be abit overwhelming at the start but I think this work was damn entertaining.
Mind over body < Code over Body - Prospectus for a Future Body

Compared to everything else this exhibit may seem abit too… normal. I assure you, its damn weird one.
The videos document an artist’s study into recreating movements in the body via electrical currents - this lets him move his body the exact same way as dancers from the past.
Watching him recreate the movements gave me goosebumps.
Mr Blue Sky - Fait Blue

Singapore moves sibei fast - which is what makes Fait Blue such a nice change of pace.
I got to lepak on a comfy beanbag and watch an aimless blue sky as it goes from sunrise to sunset. Shiok sia.
Black Mirror meets Cosmos - Mirror

“See lah you game until cannot tell whats real already?!”. Sound familiar? Most of our parents have said this before. That said right - when you win or lose a game - that feeling is real one.
While the graphics definitely didn’t age well - Mirror’s story is quite relatable though lengthy, pondering the future of a world where reality and the virtual world can be treated as one.
Poke-Puberty - 2nd Puberty

2nd Puberty looks like the set for Singtel’s next 5G advertisement. Isolated furniture, neon lights, guerilla Mac Book gaming- hold up, heh?

2nd Puberty invites you to game on a pokemon-style game centred around puberty on a MacBook. It's scrappy but that makes it relatable because not alot of us don't have fancy PCs.
During the time of review it was unfortunately under maintenance but now I’ve been told it's working! I envy those who get to try it, looked very fun.
Online Dating, luck not skill - A Souvenir

Honestly right I was disappointed that this exhibit was under maintenance and so was 2nd Puberty. A sign on social media would definitely have been good. That said, upon time of publishing, the installation has been fixed.
Anyway, this claw machine is supposed to symbolise the illusion of control you have with online dating but at $5, I’m not sure I would have tried for one of the prizes either.
Honest Opinion:

Creative Visuals that Connect - 3.5/5
Overall, the exhibition is a tight ship and while most are interesting, I do wish there were more interactive elements. It's a small exhibition too.
With the exhibition only taking up 1 gallery, you might take a lil over 1 hour at best.
The installations are interesting though not the most entertaining. I can only imagine how much more fun it would have been if the exhibits 2nd Puberty and A Souvenir were working.
The Little Red Dot Showcase which displays 20 artworks has also popped up though only at the time of writing this! So right I would suggest go kaypoh both to make the most of your trip.
Do make it a point to check out Narcissus Pixelus for a free 8bit avatar!
You can check out Singapore Art Museum’s Can Everyone See My Screen from now till 11 December. Opening hours are from 10 am to 7 pm.
