A picnic in the park as the sun sets and you watch worldwide stars in action - what a package.

You know, open-air cinemas have always had a weird place in my head.
Singaporeans hate the heat right, that's why cinemas always feel sibei cold.
So why would an atas version of your liverpool superfan uncle's football screening draw such a big crowd. Also, why do some people think it's a great date idea?
To answer that I smoked my wallet and attended one of the biggest open-air cinemas yet - Films At The Fort. Films at the Fort is an annual Open-air Cinema experience that promises good food and great films at the ever iconic Fort Canning Green.
Our Experience
The Bones & a Little More:
With $36 tickets, my expectations were damn high - think parents on results day after sending their kid to tuition for all subjects.
Unfortunately, they would not be met, with the tickets only entitling us to watch the movie on a grass patch. Sad sia.
That said, there are free wine samples & Casillero del Diablo merchandise being given out from one of the booths.
Though it was stated clearly on the website, I couldn’t help but feel disappointed that you would have to purchase Seat Cushions for an additional $16.

If you don’t have seat cushions, the solution could be sitting on a bulkier bag but some of us might get back ache after a while depending on the movie run time.
F & B on Lock:
An open-air movie is essentially a picnic, and a picnic without food - siao, you want jiak hong is it?
Thankfully no one needs to eat air because the Providore has set up shop, selling sides, mains, drinks and even ice cream. To my relief most things were still reasonably priced given its an event.

Ordering for 2 we got ourselves a Hand-stretched Parma Ham Pizza($15.50), a Jamon & Manchego Cheese Croquetas($14.50) and 2 Remedy Organic Kombucha - Ginger Lemon & Raspberry Lemonade($7 each).

The Hand-stretched Parma Ham Pizza($15.50) had a light base, with savoury salami and looking back, damn heng it was thin crust, I think it would be a lot harder to eat a thick cheesy pizza.

As for the Manchego Cheese Croquetas($14.50), we were both disappointed having referenced the filled-to-the-brim display item, only to get four pieces when we ordered.
Taste wise it was great, an explosion of melted cheese, with beef pieces & a tangy sauce.

The Ginger Lemon Kombucha($7) tasted like unsweetened ginger beer while the Raspberry Lemonade Kombucha($7) tasted like raspberry lemonade soda. Honestly, just save money and skip the kombucha.
In fact right, if you don’t want to shelve out money for food, you are also allowed to bring your own food and drinks. Swee right - BUT bringing in alcoholic drinks is prohibited.

A Bar has also been set up, serving not just the sponsored brand of Casillero del Diablo but also beers like Asahi($13).
A Sense of Grandeur

The event area is quite atas one, you walk in on a literal red carpet and the stores remind me of the ones I saw at F1 when I was a kid.
Music is played pre-show to excite audiences for what's the come too.

That said right, my brain went wow when the sun set and the fairy lights gave the place a romantic glow, damn pretty sia.
I could also go on about how great the staff were. They were bubbly and gave off an energy I could only describe as chill orientation facilitators.

On a side note, there is also an intermission halfway through the movie for viewers to take a number 1 or 2 - and quite a few toilets too!
Honest Opinion:

Certainly an experience - but its gonna cost you - 3.5/5
As an entire package, the ambience, location and food really make for great date potential.
Thing is though, you really need dough for the full experience.
I’m still having a hard time wrapping my head around the $36 entrance fee but maybe the event’s just not for us.
Not for now lah, but who knows, when we get older- make more money, it could be in the books. Just grab a few friends, a picnic mat, a cheddar board and relax. Interested in checking out Films at the Fort? You can book your tickets to one of their many movies here!
