The Bar @ FairPrice Xtra! An odd but enjoyable concept

A weird concept. But the quality? Fairly decent.

I was out buying groceries at Marine Parade’s Fairprice one day. It was your run-of-the-mill supermarket; you had your usual fruits and produce section, a butcher cutting deli meats and a bartender sliding an office lady her third Mojito.

Eh, wait.

Yes, you heard that correctly, someone decided that the groceries shopping experience wouldn't be complete without a bar, or rather, as it’s called, The Bar @ FairPrice Xtra

What We Ordered:

When we came in, we wanted to get a drink along with oysters, but they had run out of oysters. Yes, a bar in a supermarket had somehow run out of oysters in the afternoon.

Aiya, anyways, the first drink of the day was their signature NTUC Fizz($9.90), basically a Gin Fizz with a splash of corporate branding. The first sip brought a robust strawberry flavour giving way to a refreshingly sour aftertaste. It was actually quite shiok.

Then came our other cocktail, the Espresso Martini ($9.90). It had a bittersweet coffee taste, something you’d enjoy if you had just gone through a breakup.

The final drink we got was a Mojito($9.90). The lime was so overwhelming that I couldn't even taste the fizz of the soda or the mint. Really CMI one.

Finally, the Fresh oysters($15), which came in an ugly plastic tray. Seeing how I got up at 10am just to ensure I wouldn't miss it like yesterday, I had high expectations.

To my surprise, the oysters were really shiok; they had a fresh, salty and succulent taste. Dipping it in the tabasco sauce provided made it even better, giving it a spicy and slightly sour tang.

Unfortunately for our tee-totaler friends, you can only get the oysters if you order an alcoholic beverage.

Location & Setting:

Aesthetic? What aesthetic sia? It’s literally a bar in a supermarket; there isn’t anything that makes the place stand out, except for maybe the small neon sign on the corner.

The service staff was pretty friendly and patient too.

There are loads of seats nearby, so don’t worry about finding a spot if you aren’t able to chope a seat at the counter.

Honest Opinion

A Weird Concept That Somehow Works - 3/5

If you get past the weird concept, The Bar has decent drinks at a reasonable price.

They also have a broad menu, with many classic cocktails and other liquors you’d expect at a regular bar. That said, you should try their signature Fairprice Fizz which would go well together with oysters.

But honestly, should you even go there? If you are desperate to indulge in your inner demons at a low price, I would say go for it. But if you want an atas place to vibe at, then give this place a pass.

Alight at Eunos Station and take bus 13 and then bus 966 to Parkway Parade.
